Now Available Beyond TV 4.8

March 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm by Melissa

In the latest Beyond TV 4.8 release users will enjoy new features such as saved guide searches, frame-by-frame playback, access control, and warning e-mail notifications.

Saved Guide Searches: Love Will Ferrell movies? Want to make sure you catch them on TV? Now you can input keywords of your favorite actors, sports team, or TV show genre and have Beyond TV e-mail you the next time they appear on TV, or simply have it auto record. (In case you’re wondering how conflicts are handled, auto-recordings from saved guide searches are added at the lowest priority to your recording schedule.)

Warning Notifications via E-mail: Configure your Beyond TV to notify you via e-mail whenever an error has occurred to your machine. Avoid missed recordings, by instantaneously solving computer hiccups as they occur.

Frame-By-Frame Playback: Paused recordings can be advanced by single frame with the arrow keys for a more detailed review. Now you can watch in amazement as the Mythbuster’s gang explode their contraptions frame-by-frame.

Access Control: Beyond TV now supports the creation of user accounts with restricted privileges. Activities like watching recordings, watching live TV, scheduling recordings, and changing settings can be access-controlled on a user-by-user basis. Using access controls, you can monitor what and how much TV your kids watch, by restricting Live TV and allowing them only to watch recorded shows recorded by you.

Access Control Permissions

Beyond TV’s new access control makes it so you can give different users, different levels of permissions.

Restricted View

Here’s what the web admin looks like to a user who only has permission to watch recordings.

Recording Stats: Better manage your storage capacity with at-a-glance recording stats, including average hours per day of recordings, based on your recording schedule.

In addition to the new features, we’ve made the following improvements to make recording and watching television more manageable.

Sort Recorded Library: Simply hit the O button on your keyboard while viewing Recorded Shows in Viewscape and sort all recorded shows by name, original air date, or date recorded in ascending or descending order. This improved feature is useful when trying to watch past seasons in release order.

Way Faster Scheduler: The recording scheduler is now 10 to 20 times faster than before. Any use of the program guide such as scrolling, deleting/adding new jobs, forcing/blocking recordings, and changing job priorities will result in a smoother and quicker output.

Is Beyond TV 4.8 compatible with VISTA? Does 4.8 operate in conjunction with media center or independently of media center?

    Thanks

Ok, now we’re talking. Now I can delegate a chick to do some of this TV scheduling and such for me! Plus I just had an issue with my PC and was in another country so didn’t think I’d have a problem if I just let BTV run. Would have been nice to have had this when I was away so I could remote in and fix. Glad these maintenance features are here now though!

Still waiting for full support for cable clear QAM HD channels.

    This is important !!!

Saved Guide Searches is a cool feature, but on your search you got shows like “Two and a Half Men.” Will Ferrell is not in “Two and a Half Men.” There is an actor who’s last name is Ferrell. How do we search so that we only get shows with “Will Ferrell” and not “Conchata Ferrell?” I tried using “quotes” but that did not work.

    Thanks!

Are there any future plans to make Beyond TV available to 64 bit users?

Here’s a great feature to add. Search by content type and when.

    EX: Content type: [Movies/History shows/Documentaries/Comedy's/etc...]
    When: Tonight/8Pm/10Pm/Tomorrow Night/This week/weekend/etc…

Seems soo bloody simple. Do it!

I didn’t realize the email notification was a feature in the new release until I read the description here. Not the easiest feature to enable (was Advanced Settings a menu option before 4.8?). In any case, nice add.

“Now you can watch in amazement as the Mythbuster’s gang explode their contraptions frame-by-frame.”

That should be “Mythbusters gang explodes.”

That, and if the “Mythbusters gang” “explode[d] their contraptions frame-by-frame,” I wouldn’t need this feature.

    :)

Regardless, this frame-advance feature should not have replaced existing functionality. Over the years I’ve learned the habit of pausing before skipping or fast-forwarding/rewinding because it’s (much) faster, especially with DivX.

Now that’s gone, replaced with something I never wanted.

    Why?

Why not *at least* — if you’re not going to provide a toggle that enables me to use Beyond TV as I have for several years rather than being forced to learn new behavior — separate the directional arrows from the FF/REW buttons on the FireFly remote?

But WILL IT WORK with Vista SP-1?

I have both Vista 32 & 64. Will it work and not have issues with either of them?

Is there a chance that beyond TV will work like slingbox in the future? So you can control and watch your tv in different place. Thanks.

Why did BTV 4.8 installation/opening change the color scheme on Vista and turn off the Aero interface? I’m likely to downgrade in order to get my computer to function fully again. This should be more clearly stated in upgrade literature.

Just have to give props to Snapstream, honestly this is the best software I have ever paid for. You guys do a great job and I am most thankful for this. This does not mean BTV has not given me a headache because it has plenty of times.

Most of the features in 4.8 I could careless about but have to tell you I just love the fact recorded shows can be sorted by original air date, this feature was long overdue.

I would like to see much more success for Snapstream as they must be the most dedicated company I have ever seen. I think it would be a good idea for one of the bundle packages to include an entire setup. This would be for the non-tech geeks who could not configure the unit themselves. On the order form the customer can enter in the type of equipment that it will be used for and the setup would then include the proper IR configurations… etc..

    Just a thought.

I’m nwe to this site and new to the whole PC PVR thing. I’ve had TiVO for about 4 years and really love it, and I’d like to find a card that allows me to have the same features that the TiVo box has - namely the ability to always buffer 30 minutes of the show I’m watching without having to pause the show. With TiVO it will record two shows at the same time, my current PVR will only record what I’m watching at the time. Does anyone know if Beyond TV does these things?

I love BTV. It is one of the best SW products I have ever purchased. I have one request though, I’d love to see support for a 64b OS. Either XP 64b &/or Vista 64b. Any plans for this?

    Thanks for the great product.

Beyond TV is a great product and I love the user interface. The software is well thought out and implemented. But, I am frustrated by the lack of Clear QAM support. I can only receive one digital over-the-air channel where I live and don’t want to spend the money for digital cable or satellite. I check Snapstream’s website every week hoping that there is a new release which supports Clear QAM with the Hauppage cards. I hope this is coming soon. I also purchased Beyond Media, but have not seen any new releases for it in a long time - has it been dropped by Snapstream? It also has a great user interface and is easy to use.
