Help us test Beyond TV 4.6.1 (did I mention it includes QAM support?)
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:57 pm by Rakesh
Earlier this evening, we shipped release candidate 1 (RC1) of Beyond TV 4.6.1 over at the SnapStream Beta Program (if you aren’t a member, just sign-up; access is immediate).
In addition to a slew of bug fixes, this release sports a new feature: QAM support with the HDHomeRun. From the release notes:
The big news for this build is support for the HDHomeRun network based atsc/qam dual tuner. Read that sentence again, I’ll wait. Due to an interesting atsc mapping system unique to the Homerun, we were able to include support for the QAM side of its tuner. The setup is a little more difficult than your traditional tuner card, but the result is well worth it. For more information on setting it up, visit the Beyond TV beta section of forums.snapstream.com
Based on a user-created poll, this should make a lot of people happy. In fact, I just spotted this post in the beta forums:
wow, this is awesome!
*head explodes*
*headless body goes out and buys HDHomeRun*
Setup isn’t for the faint of heart, but what you get in the end is undeniably cool… access to the unencrypted digital TV channels on your cable feed!

This is a huge feature addition for Beyond TV! I own the HDHomeRun and it is a great product. If you have any unencrypted cable channels, this tuner and BeyondTV give you the ability to tune HD Channels with no cable box and no antenna. Plus its a dual tuner that doesn’t require an open slot on your PC since it hooks directly up to your network. Thanks to Snapstream and SiliconDust for making this happen. Great work!

Great stuff! It took me a little while to verify the stations I received, a little longer to understand the process but the results are great. Can;t wait for the fold version to be ready for download (maybe it already is via as I got an email from ZACK saying it will be available some time this week).
The person who wrote the http://projecthtpc.wordpress.com/2007/03/26/how-to-record-unencypted-hd-cable-with-beyond-tv-hdhomerun/ tutorial for using HDHomeRun and BeyondTV did a wonderful job and all I can say THANKS! It is what I had always had in mind for my PVR/DVR. Again “WOW! and THANKS!!

Will QAM eventually be available for KWorld atsc-115?

Team,
Congratulations on making QAM available for the HD homerun, and while part of me is excited, the other part is frustrated. Many of us had bought many other HDTV tuners with the expectation of support for those devices down the line. I remember testing was being done, but no word on the outcome. I remember Snapstream selling Dvico like it was going out style for years. Why do you have QAM available for a new product when you don’t have it availabe for the others you were selling? It would not be that difficult to map the results of the QAM TV stations of any HDYV tuner to your product/guide.
Thank you in advanced for your response.

Jeff, the reason why QAM support for the HDHomeRun got done when it did is because of the way that Silicon Dust did their drivers. They managed to “overload” the standard driver model for ATSC cards in such a way that adding support for the HDHomeRun’s QAM capabilities amounted to an extension of our existing ATSC support. In contrast, other cards with QAM support have completely proprietary methods of tuning and in some cases they don’t even have BDA drivers (I think this is still true for DVICO… they were going to have BDA drivers at some point that supported QAM but I don’t think they ever materialized).

Team,
Thank you for the reply and enlightenment. I do think that the DVICO 5’s have BDA drivers. If not, then my mistake, but I will look into. Is Snapstream currently working on providing QAM support to the prior products such as DVICO? Specifically the one’s sold on this site?
