FAQ: What about Vista support for Beyond TV?

January 31st, 2007 at 5:17 pm by Rakesh

I saw this question today from a user about Vista support in Beyond TV:

I am considering purchasing Beyond TV 4.5, but would really rather wait until you have a version that is compatible with Windows Vista. Do you know when this will be? Is there anyway I can purchase the product now and get a free upgrade when a Vista compatible version is released?

Since Microsoft’s Vista was launched earlier this week, some of you (33.23% percent of you if our survey is correct) may have the same question.

Beyond TV 4.6, the successor to Beyond TV 4.5, will begin shipping very soon now and, among other things, it will contain a broad set of fixes that make Beyond TV fully compatible with Microsoft Vista. And like other point releases, it will be a free upgrade for existing Beyond TV 4.x users. Keep checking back here for a more definitive Beyond TV 4.6 schedule!

I am very much looking forward to this new release! I can’t wait to upgrade to Vista with BeyondTV. Keep up the great work!

Will this include a better work-around for WMP 11 than uninstalling it? I really like version 11, but then again, I REALLY like the ability to skip commercials in recorded programs, so if the two wants can be successfully reconciled, that’d be the best!

    I am a Beyond TV 4.5 customer. I really like version 4.5.

I installed Vista Home Premium last week, and Beyond TV 4.5 seems to run fine, even with Firefly. I did not test all the features, so I will be glad when Vista-compatible version 4.6 is available.

    Thanks,
    Alan

Thank you for not jumping to version 5 with this release. It’s nice to know that I won’t have to buy an upgrade to be able to use this on my Vista HTPC… (I have been a customer since 3.x and love the software, keep up the good work).

Will this also include full support for the Firefly remote as well?

Yes, it will fix all WMP11 issues. We’re working on Firefly compatibility issues.

I was a Vista Beta tester. I never tried BeyondTV in Vista, though. I am happily running it in XP. However, I have upgraded to Vista Premium and look forward to migrating to Vista. By the way, Media Center in Vista is a disaster. It won’t work with my Hauppauge PVR 350 card. I seem to get a choice of EITHER the HD antenna channels or the Cable/Antenna channels BUT not both. So, I’m severly crippled in Vista at the moment. Good thing I have a dual-boot machine with BeyondTV 4.5 running like a top using both cards flawlessly. Keep up the good work. BeyondTV is an excellent product!

My other card (which I didn’t mention in the previous posting) is an ATI TV Wonder 650.

Please tell me that BeyondTV 4.6 son’t be conforming to DRM like Windows Media Center does. I’ve been using WMC for a few days (until BTV 4.6 comes out) and it won’t allow me to record copy protected channels!! I’ve never heard of anything so asinine before. Now I can’t even record a show off of TV to watch at my convenience? If BTV supports DRM I’ll be dumping my cable movie channels and going back to the video store. What a backwards step in technology.

Can’t wait for 4.6. Been running Vista RTM since last Nov, and I miss BTV! Windows MCE is just inadequate in so many ways.

i joined the beta team and am running BeyondTV 4.6 with Vista Ultimate
useing an ATI TV Wonder Elite and it works like a dream it’s good to have BeyondTV on my system again :)

What about support for CableCard? Will this be included or is this coming down the pipe?

i can’t wait to be able to watch tv again *lol* as a single mom who can’t afford digital cable with dvr, but stayed with someone for a while who could & got terrible spoiled, i also can’t really watch law & order or csi with my preschooler running around ~ so this seems like a wonderful possibility!

i was going to buy the Pinnacle Systems – PCTV HD Pro Stick USB 2.0 TV Tuner (on sale at best buy this week for $90) but most of the reviews at amazon said the software was horrible. the only solution suggested was this software. i’m definitely not an expert computer user & just got an hp laptop running vista so i’m curious for suggestions re: hardware to get & if i should wait for the next update of the software (since it seems some more savvy users have been able to get it to work on vista?)

    thanks for all the comments!

Will this version support QAM? That should be the #1 update for BeyondTV. I wish I could capture unencrypted HD from my cable instead of that darn antenna. Heck, the antenna is so much trouble, that I never use BeyondTV for HD. I use the software that came with my Dvico card. It’s too bad because the only think I used BTV for now is the TV listings. Ugh, a waste of good software. If you want HD, it’s best to wait for QAM support!!!

I’ll be upgrading to 4.6 over the weekend. Looks like a good upgrade even for those without Vista. I’ve been thinking about getting Vista Ultimate but I’ve always pondered if its Media Center capabilities would outshine BeyondTV… From what i’ve heard it doesn’t seem that way. Can anyone compare and contrast? Then I agree, the next update should include QAM support. I many of us are holding off buying an HD card because of the uncertainty of BeyondTV support for them!

So this thread looks fairly old, but Rakesh says 4.6 should be sort of Vista-compatible. The current version is 4.8-ish but the FAQ still says OS compatibility is Win XP Pro and 2000. Is Vista support still not official?

Chazmati– Beyond TV 4.8 _does_ support Vista. It sounds like our FAQ just hasn’t been updated. It’s on our system requirements page: http://www.snapstream.com/products/beyondtv/sysreq.asp

Thanks for pointing out the problem with the FAQ though. It’ll be fixed soon.

I keep trying to like BTV, but the program keeps “missing”. Now that 4.9 actually runs under Vista OK, It doesn’t recognize the QAM capability of my Pinnacle Ultimate Stick which I certainly need. Is there a fix coming?
