Customize your Beyond TV 4 Program Guide

December 5th, 2005 at 7:26 pm by Chrissy

I always loved that jingle about getting your burger just the way you like it. You may have heard it too: “Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce. Special orders don’t upset us.

We have a pretty similar philosophy at SnapStream about giving our users exciting features that let them customize their viewing experience. One of these great new features that I love about Beyond TV 4 is the ability to customize the number of rows and columns you have in my program guide.

Program Guide with Five Rows and Five Columns

It’s easy to do through the “Settings menu. Under this menu, just click on “General Settings. From here, you can customize your program guide by selecting your row and column settings. If you have a big television, maybe you want to see more programs with a 7 row by 7 column grid. Or maybe you want a 3 by 3 display. Whatever your preference, it’s quick, easy, and the fastest way to get your program guide customized, just the way you like it.

This is a very good feature addition and will no doubt benefit people who have higher resolution monitors/TVs to take advantage of it.

However, I think you are blowing your own horn to soon. How about the ablity to rename the channels on the side so a channel as pictured in your screenshot, “KPRCDT3″ can be called something meaningful.

Something to think about if you really want your customers to “Have it your way!”

I also noticed a significant firefly remote response delay when adding additional rows or columns but the use of mouse in unaffected. I also second Alex’s opinion to add “something meaningful” to the station ID.

How about some little jpeg images with “FOX”, “ESPN” etc… Also we need to be able to customize color coding for movies, news, and sports (purple, green and grey for example). Maybe even highlight one of the new category areas, so I could mark all SciFi’s with an orange border. That way a SciFi movie would be filled purple with an orange border… I guess I can still dream.

I second the vote to make the guide more responsive. Cache that thing and make it quick! A fast machine shouldn’t be stuttering on this sort of database. GBPVR has the right idea here.

If you’re thinking about adding customization features to the channel lineup, how about letting the user select a subset of channels (removing the ones not normally watched) and then giving it a name and making it the default lineup? That would make things more efficient.

Steve, did you mean something like a favorites? That would be nice, one subset of favorites for kids, another for wife, another for when the kids are asleep(locked by password), and my channels…

An ability to customize the channel lineup would be excellent- there are too many channels that I have no interest in and it would be very helpful if I could create my own channel lineup.

The icons for the channels would also be nice- I have seen that with another program I believe but I am not sure which one.

You can customize the channel lineup with the web admin tool. If you have a normal beyondtv install and you need to do is type localhost as the address for your web browser. This will take you to the admin tool and you can make advanced changes to beyondtv. Click Settings, then Channels and you can click which channels to keep. I have taken out all of the channels that I never watch. Now they don’t show up in the Guide and they don’t show up when you are channel surfing. You can also setup multiple Channel Lineups for the same TV source and each one can have different channels selected on it.

I am aware of this function…however, will this affect the program guide? My preference would be to control what channels were seen in the program guide so I can see what what shows I want to record more easily. It is rare that I watch TV realtime anymore. Thanks.

How about a video box in the program guide for overlay mode

Does the guide have the feature to display just the listings for a single channel at a time?

So that I can see everything that’s on BBC1 tonight and then skip to BBC2 and see what’s on that channel tonight.

I prefer to see a channel at a time rather than everything that’s on all the channels at a particular time.

I use a TV Spider Video Source Extender…output of CH125 (Cable).
Would be nice to add that Channel to my Regular Cable Lineup since the output of my Sattelite Receiver is transmitted on it.
Is this possible now…or have I missed something. My avtive Cable goes from CH2 to CH105. Need to add CH125.

I posted this in January..and have not gotten any ideas how to add a Channel to my Guide. (Ch125).
I’m still using Media Center to record from Ch125..since it is easily added by keying in 1-2-5…Surely Snapstream must have come up with a fix for this shortcoming by now. I don’t expect to get a program Guide from Ch125 but toggling between Media Center and Snapsteam is a Pain in the axx.
